When gardeners compete, the results are ridiculously huge and hilariously impractical.
Just take a look at the following vegetables that are so big, they need their own parking space.
The Marrow Marvel
Weight: 256.2 pounds (116.4 kilograms)
Grower: Vincent Sjodin, UK (2021)
Marrows might not win any beauty pageants, but Vincent Sjodin’s record-breaking 256.2-pound (116.4 kg) whopper from 2021 sure turned heads in the veggie world.
Shaped like a green submarine, this colossal creation left zucchinis everywhere questioning their life choices.
The Onion Overlord
Weight: 19.78 pounds (8.97 kilograms)
Grower: Gareth Griffin, UK (2023)
Gareth cried tears of joy (or maybe onion fumes) when his 19-pound monster won the title of heaviest onion at the Harrogate Autumn Show in 2023.
This thing was the size of a bowling ball, but way less aerodynamic.
It took him 13 years of trying to win, finally smashing the previous record that had been untouched since 2014 — making it the veggie equivalent of a mic drop.
The Carrot Colossus
Weight: 22.44 pounds (10.17 kilograms)
Grower: Christopher Qualley, USA (2017)
Carrots are meant to be crunchy and snack-sized lunchbox treats, but Christopher Qualley said, “Nah, let’s make it absurd.”
Cristopher’s winning 22.44-pound (10.17 kg) carrot was the size of a toddler and probably just as hard to wrangle.
This is the heaviest carrot ever seen, but Brit Joe Atherton grew the longest carrot at 20 ft 5.86 in (6.245 m) in 2016, beating his own 2007 record of just under 20 feet (8 m).
The Cabbage King
Weight: 138.25 pounds (62.71 kilograms)
Grower: Scott Robb, USA (2012)
Growing mammoth cabbages is a high-stakes game.
These leafy giants are notorious for splitting open days before a competition and contestants have to pull out before they’ve even reached the starting line.
But Scott Robb took cabbages to superhero proportions and kept things intact when he presented this green 138.25-pound leafy giant in 2012.
Grown in Alaska, where Robb claims “Cabbages grow really well,” this green cabbage probably saw more sunlight than some office workers.
The Beastly Beetroot
Weight: 52.88 pounds (23.59 kg)
Growers: Jamie Courtney-Fortey, Gareth Fortey, Marjorie Fortey and Kevin Fortey, UK (2019)
This 52-pound crimson colossus was grown in the UK in 2019 and is the heaviest beetroot ever seen – it might well be a distant relative of bowling balls, given its size and heft.
You have to wonder what kind of soil magic its four growers conjured to pull this behemoth from the earth. Was it whispered sweet nothings, extra compost, or sheer brute force?
Either way, it’s the kind of beet that would make even the strongest blender weep.
It’s clear that these record-breaking vegetables aren’t just food — they’re feats of engineering, determination, and a whole lot of watering cans.
They may not fit in your fridge, but they’ve certainly secured their place in gardening history!
