In this DIY guide, we’ll show you how to build an efficient and simple compost bin using materials you probably already have lying around. Whether you’re new to composting or looking for a budget-friendly solution, this project is perfect for getting started.

Let’s turn waste into a gardening treasure!

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

Get a large plastic bin with a lid (like those used for storing clothes or a bin for rubbish), a drill (or hammer and nails), and a bungee cord or heavy-duty strap.

Step 2: Prepare the Bin

Using the drill (or hammer and nails), make some holes in the sides and bottom of the plastic bin. These holes let your compost “breathe” and drain excess moisture.

Step 3: Add a Base Layer

Start with a layer of small sticks or twigs at the bottom of the bin. This helps with drainage and aeration.

Step 4: Layer Your Compost

Alternate between layers of brown materials (like dried leaves, shredded paper) and green materials (like kitchen scraps, grass clippings). Aim for a mix of about 3 parts brown to 1 part green.

Step 5: Keep It Moist

Sprinkle water lightly as you add each layer to keep the compost moist, like a damp sponge.

Step 6: Mix and Turn

Every couple of weeks, use a pitchfork or shovel to mix and turn the compost. This helps it break down faster.

Step 7: Cover and Wait

Cover the bin with its lid or a tarp to keep pests out and moisture in. In a few months, you’ll have rich, dark compost ready to enrich your garden soil!

That’s it! You’re on your way to reducing waste and creating nutrient-rich compost for your plants. Have you tried composting before? Share your tips below! 🌿💚
