These Trees “Walk” for Sunshine

A walking palm tree may sound like something from a science fiction novel, but they’re as real as the rainforests they call home.

These trees have evolved with a simple but clever way of getting around.

Found in the rainforests of Central and South America, walking palm trees slowly shift their position to chase sunlight.

It all comes down to the tree’s unusual stilt-like roots above the ground. When the tree senses more light in one direction, it grows new roots on that side and lets the roots on the darker side die off.

Over time, the tree “walks” to a better location for sunshine.
